Time Zones

Australia is a large country and spans a total of 3 time zones (excluding off-shore locations like Christmas or Norfolk Islands). Fortunately for most travellers the most populous states New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland as well as Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory are all in the Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) time zone.

South Australia and the Northern Territory are in the Australian Central Standard Time (ACST) time zone.

Western Australia is in the Australian Western Standard Time (AWST) time zone.

Daylight Saving

Unfortunately only some states observe daylight saving while others do not. At least the states which do have synchonised. Daylight saving starts at 2 am on the first Sunday in October - the clock is set 1 hour forward. It ends at 2 am on the first Sunday in April.

The following states and territories observe daylight saving between the aforementioned dates:

Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT)

  • Australian Capital Territory
  • New South Wales
  • Tasmania
  • Victoria

Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT)

  • South Australia

In the box to the right you will find the current time in any of the time zones used across Australia.

The following table gives the offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

In spite of being located in New South Wales, Yancowinna County which includes the city of Broken Hill and village of Silverton uses the same time zone as South Australia (ACST / ACDT) instead of New South Wales time (AEST / AEDT).
